Grow Your Own Food, Year-round

Posted on 24 December 2013 by Jason

It is surprising just how easy it is to grow food year-round in Portland’s maritime climate. Even in the month of January it is possible for a Portland garden to yield delicious root vegetables and hearty greens. The keys to year-round gardening in Portland are building healthy soil, learning when and what to plant, and planting when others are only thinking about harvesting.
Wanting to find a way to teach their neighbors to have abundant and successful gardens, the four members of the Living City collective created an integrated garden training program in coordination with a unique plant and seed subscription located in NE Portland. Classes start February 1 and begin with organic soil building and garden planning. After deciding how to maximize your garden space, you will delve deeper into organic gardening and pest management, composting, proper harvesting techniques and food preservation.
Living City prides itself on teaching Portlanders the art of year-round gardening and the enjoyment of harvesting home grown food during the winter months. At each class, students receive open-pollinated seeds and plants, varieties well suited to Portland’s climate. Through this hands-on garden course, you will gain self-sustaining life skills that will benefit you long after completing the program.

Many people set lofty weight loss goals for the New Year. When these goals are not met, feelings of failure and despair ensue. Unhealthy eating is used as a means to soothe, which sets the dieter back both physically and mentally.
Sound familiar? This vicious cycle is the cause of so many failed attempts. Weight loss is extremely difficult because it is a multi-faceted issue. Food, exercise, relationships, stress, social habits, spirituality and knowledge are just a few of the factors that play a roll. Weight loss needs to be approached from a holistic perspective.

The program also includes a three-month fitness membership, where participants can choose from small group classes, such as TRX, yoga, Pilates and boot camp. The small group setting provides the support, motivation and accountability that are keys to success.
