North Portland Wellness Center Welcomes Kelly Simmons, DC

Posted on 27 July 2012 by Jason

Beginning this month, the North Portland Wellness Center (NPWC) welcomes Dr. Kelly Simmons and a new Chiropractic specialty to its offerings—prenatal and pediatric Chiropractic care.
Dr. Simmons uses applied kinesiology, which allows her to be interactive with all aspects of her patient’s health and adds a new dimension to standard diagnosis. This technique evaluates structural, chemical and mental aspects of health. By taking this approach, she can help individuals of all ages address whatever conditions they are struggling with. Patients note that her calm and friendly disposition makes a great treatment environment for infants and children. Additionally, working with moms-to-be is a true joy for Dr. Simmons. Pregnancy is a unique time for women, and she knows they are confronted with both physical and emotional challenges. She has seen first-hand the difference that quality care can make for them, and their new families.
Simmons attended Northwestern Health Sciences University in Minneapolis and received her Doctorate of Chiropractic in 2009. She has advanced training in nutrition, applied kinesiology, pregnancy and pediatric care. In addition, she is also a certified doula and has assisted many moms through labor and delivery.
Be sure to check out NPWC’s ad in this issue for their Summer Package Deal! Purchase a 60-minute massage, acupuncture and chiropractic appointment for only $150 through July and August.

Expand Your Awareness with a Spiritual Retreat

Posted on 27 July 2012 by Jason

Broaden your spiritual horizons and find release from everyday tensions by spending time at The Movement Center, a beautiful ashram in the heart of Portland that now offers a program of personal retreats.
The setting, on five lush acres in the heart of Northeast Portland, is so secluded that many neighbors don’t realize they’re there. A variety of lovingly maintained garden areas are on the grounds, which provide many places for quiet reflection.
Inside their historic building, The Movement Center has a full schedule of ongoing hatha yoga classes, morning and evening meditation programs and many options for seva (selfless service). The heart of the center’s spiritual work is eyes-open meditation
, a powerful practice in which there is a direct transmission of kundalini energy. This practice supports transformation on every level of one’s life.
Personal retreats can be for one night or for a period of several weeks—there is no minimum stay required. During a personal retreat, an individual can participate in scheduled classes and programs or have a program designed based on a selected focus. The Movement Center has a variety of accommodations, including rooms with shared baths, and a few rooms and suites with private baths.
Whether new to meditation or an experienced practitioner, anyone will benefit from an immersion in this amazing environment.

The Movement Center is located at 1021 NE 33rd Ave., Portland. For more information, call 503-231-0383, email or visit

July 2012 Celestial Living Arts

Posted on 17 July 2012 by Jason

The not-so-lazy days of summer are busy and buzzy for us this July as we continue our collective journey and personal inquiry into the matrix of where the personal truths can meet the common agreements on what we hold to be of value. It’s not unlikely that we may find some clashes as we begin to ask the necessary questions to this quagmire.
With a heavy dose of Gemini curiosity still active in what is traditionally the Cancer/Leo month of family, fun and entertainment, the king pin of mental inquiry, planet Mercury goes retrograde by mid-month. Among the line of questioning that each should be considering at this time are:

1)    How much risk should a person take to express their own individual creativity and beliefs?

2)    Are the need for personal security and safety greater than the need for collective change toward a more enlightened and inclusive society?

A yod (an astrological aspect referred to by astrologers as the finger of God) appears this month seeming to ask us to reconcile the contradictions within and move toward the necessary adjustments required to align the message with the motive.

Mantras and musings for the cosmic climate of July:

Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): The one chased away with a club comes back, but the one chased away with reason does not. ~ Kikuyu Proverb, Kenya
Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence. ~ Henry David Thoreau
Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): Beyond the pairs of opposites of which the world consists, other, new insights begin. ~ Hermann Hesse
Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): When the way comes to an end, then change – having changed, you pass through. ~ I Ching
Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): That which has no form creates form. That which has no existence brings things into existence. ~ Rumi
Virgo (Aug 23-Sep 22): The eye of the silent heart will see into great depths, and the ear of the silent mind will hear untold wonders. ~ St. Hesychius of Jerusalem
Libra (Sep 23-Oct 22): Our eyes believe themselves, our ears believe others, our intuition believes the truth of the spirit. ~ Adapted from a German Proverb
Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. ~ Anaïs Nin
Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the ancient ones; seek what they sought. ~ Basho
Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): The world is as you dream it. ~ Shamanic saying
Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. ~ Albert Einstein
